Here's another school assignment, in a somewhat informal context but still good info.  I'll be taking Breastfeeding 2 in the winter term, so I'll post more of these as they are available.

This was an assignment this term, to write an info sheet on delayed cord clamping.I wrote it with first-person pronouns, even though I am not a midwife yet, so that it will be easy to use when I do have a practice. It still needs some revision, but I thought I'd put it up here and update here when I do revise it.

I was listening to OPB today, and one statement jumped out at me.  It was a discussion on death and dying, and that wonderful/horrible place in life when one knows he or she is dying.  How it is a blessed time, because of all the normal day-to-day frustrations no longer mattering, but also just hard, as one knows life is coming to an end.  Decisions have to be made that are permanent, and a certain acceptance is inherent in a good death.  The statement that jumped out at me was "Death does not cause suffering; resistance to death causes suffering."

Heather from Dooce is one of the mega-mommy-bloggers, one that I read regularly.  Here she discusses her turnabout from wanting an epidural "two days before I start contractions" to wanting to try for a natural birth.  She hired a doula to help her reach her goal.  Read here about her change of heart.

During pregnancy, certain substances in your environment are harmful to your developing baby.  Some are more harmful than others.  Here is a list of harmful substances; some are still under study to find out if they are harmful.  As always, it is up to you, the pregnant mother, to decide how you will use this information.  I have more information for each substance; my doula clients are welcome to ask for more information.

Listed here are some of the more common pregnancy discomforts and some suggestions for how to cope with them.  For more severe problems or for more information, always ask your care provider.  Not all women will develop all of these discomforts, but if you do develop them, it is normal for pregnancy.

    Being born is important
You who have stood at the bedposts
and seen a mother on her high harvest day,
the day of the most golden of harvest moons for her.

You who have seen the new wet child
    dried behind the ears,
    swaddled in soft fresh garments,
pursing its lips and sending a groping mouth
toward nipples where white milk is ready.

You who have seen this love's payday
of wild toiling and sweet agonizing.

You know being born is important.
You know that nothing else was ever so important to you.
